World cycling champions line-up for criterium championships

By Sports Media NZ

World champions and Olympic hopefuls will line-up for the Skoda Criterium National Cycling Championships in Takapuna on Friday evening.

London Olympian Rushlee Buchanan will defend her women’s title while Auckland professional Mike Northey will be chasing his third win in four years in the exciting circuit in downtown Takapuna.

Current track world champions Alex Frame and Regan Gough will compete, as they prepare for the upcoming UCI World Cup competition, against some of the country’s leading young road riders.

They are led by the 28 year old Northey, the 2014 Commonwealth Games representative and UK-based Madison Genesis professional, who won the criterium honours in 2011 and 2013, and was runner-up in 2012 and last year.

He will be challenged by world championship representatives Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu), the 2012 winner, James Oram and Dion Smith (both Auckland), who will all ride for the new British-based One Pro Cycling team next year, owned by former England cricketer Matt Pryor.

Another to watch for is exciting Manawatu teenager Campbell Stewart who won two rainbow jerseys at this year’s junior track world championships and has dominated age and schools competition on the road and track.

Buchanan, 27, has recently returned from a season with her United Healthcare team in USA as she prepares for the upcoming Track World Cup season looking towards the Rio Olympics.

The 2014 national criterium and road champion will be joined by fellow Cycling New Zealand high performance track riders Pip Sutton, the 2011 winner, Racquel Sheath and Georgia Williams, the 2012 champion who has returned from a season with the BePink professional team in Europe.

They will be pushed by a bevy of talented young riders including 2013 runner-up Sophie Williamson and Auckland teenagers Holly White and Madeleine Park, who won junior track world championship titles this year.

The competition, around an exciting and tight circuit comprising Hurstmere Rd and The Strand, begins at 5.30pm with the under-17 races, with the elite women’s race over 30 minutes from 6.50 and the elite men over 45 minutes from 7.30pm
