Sergent, Bewley mid-pack in super slick time trial

By Cycling New Zealand

UCI ROAD CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – Day 4 Wrap
New Zealand riders Jesse Sergent and Sam Bewley finished mid-pack in an extraordinarily fast battle for the individual time trial honours at the UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Virginia, USA today.
Sergent (Trek Factory) and fellow World Tour rider Bewley (Orica GreenEdge) were 35th and 43rd respectively in the demanding 53.5km test in Richmond.

Sergent made a swift start to be 12th fastest through the first 16kms that favoured the former pursuiter, 22nd at mid-race and finally finishing 35th in 1:05.43, which was three minutes down on debut winner Vasil Kiryienka. The 34-year-old Belarus rider has been in the top four twice and won the time trial at the Giro d’Italia and t he recent inaugural European Games.

“It’s nice to see in both the men and women time trials that the winner has been in the making for so long and with so many medals before the (rainbow) jersey this year,” Sergent said of Kiryienka and compatriot Linda Villumsen.

The pair will now recover before joining fellow World Tour rider Greg Henderson (Lott-Soudal) for the elite men’s road race on Monday (NZ time).

Riders will check out the course for the road race tomorrow. The road race begins on Saturday (NZ time) with Gerogia Catterick (Blenheim), Hannah Gumbley (Auckland) and Mikayla Harvey (Wanaka) in the junior women’s race over 81kms and James Oram (Axeon Cycling, North Harbour), Dion Smith (Hincapie Racing, Auckland) and Hayden McCormick (Lotto Soudal, Te Awamutu) in the under-23 men over 178km.

The road course is extremely technical with narrow streets, cobbled sections including climbs with a number of tight corners. It is similar to a typical kermesse (criterium) circuit in Belgium which is tipped to suit the skilled power-based riders.

Results, elite men time trial, 53.5km: Vasil Kiryienka (BLR) 1:02:29.45, 1; Adriano Malori (ITA) 1:02:38.53, 2; Jerome Coppel (FRA) 1:02:56.07, 3. Also New Zealanders: Jesse Sergent 1:05:43.04, 35; Sam Bewley 1:06:13.67, 43.
