New Cycling Performance Hubs Network to Strengthen Pathway

By Cycling New Zealand

Cycling New Zealand has today announced a major new initiative to support and grow its now world-leading high performance programme.

Up to eight Cycling Performance Hubs (CPHs) will be progressively rolled out around the country, with the primary objective of increasing the quality and quantity of riders feeding into the elite tier.

“The rollout of regional Cycling Performance Hubs will be key to our sustained future success,” said Cycling New Zealand CEO, Andrew Matheson.

“Our current outlook is extremely bright with rainbow jersey wearers in our squad, unparalleled Commonwealth Games success, a world-class facility in the Avantidrome, a UCI World Cup on home soil in just over 100 days, and our Rio prospects tracking well.

“But to ensure we can sustain and further build on this success, our pathway needs to be world-class too, and the hubs will help strengthen this link in the chain.”

The hubs will primarily target the Under-19 to Under-23 age group of developing riders and will be underpinned by quality coaching. Each hub will have a fulltime coach who will work closely with regional coaches and athletes to ensure quality development programmes are in place that aligns in direction and philosophy to the centralised high performance programme.

A Waikato Performance Hub will be the first to roll out for ease of alignment with the centralised high performance programme before broadening the network to other regions.

Within the CPH network will be a National Mountain Bike Performance Hub in Rotorua and a National BMX Performance Hub in Cambridge, to develop talent across the cycling codes. The remainder of the network will have a road and track focus like the Waikato Performance Hub.

“We’re working to a timeframe of two-three years for the full network to be up and running, but we will need to bring regional resources and funding to bear to achieve this.

“With advertising for a Waikato Performance Hub coach commencing this week, we’re off to a great start and very thankful for the support of High Performance Sport New Zealand and major donor Richard Seton,” added Mr Matheson.

The other locations for the Cycling Performance Hubs will be announced as funding is finalised.
