Waikato University crews announced for September's Gallagher Great Race

Waikato University men are set to defend last year’s win with a new crew which includes a number of national representatives alongside one crew member from last year’s winning combination.

The men’s crews will be battling for the coveted Harry Mahon Memorial Trophy on 13th September against Harvard and Cambridge universities.

Waikato has won nine from 13 occasions with Harvard beaten by Waikato in their two previous visits (2007, 2014) and Cambridge coming away with three wins from seven occasions (2004, 2008, 2010).

Waikato University women have an outstanding record against international crews, winning 10 of 13 races. This year’s crew also boasts a number of national representatives and sees two crew members from last year back in the boat.

Melbourne and Sydney university crews have both challenged Waikato University for the Bryan Gould Cup on five occasions. Melbourne won the women’s title in 2006, while Sydney won in 2009.

The Gallagher Great Race has been sponsored by local business icon Gallagher since its inception in 2002 and is now in its 14th year.

The race’s international format includes a three boat competition raced upstream over a 3.8km stretch of the Waikato River, which includes going under three of Hamilton’s six bridges.

It is a free, family event.
