ITU raises more than $10,000 for Nepal Earthquake Fund

By International Triathlon Union (ITU)

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) recently completed a solidarity campaign called the Triathlon Family Nepalese Earthquake Emergency Fundraising Campaign to raise emergency funds for the people of Nepal for immediate needs such as food, water, shelter and medical supplies.

ITU is pleased to confirm a total of $10,520 was raised during the one-month campaign, which will now be sent to the Nepal Triathlon Association.

“I’d like to thank everyone that donated to the campaign, as well as to all of the National Federations that stepped forward to assist us in helping our friends in Nepal,” said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado.

A number of initiatives were created to maximize the campaign’s potential including a donation page for triathlon fans and members to donate directly to the Nepal Triathlon Association. ITU also donated all of its May earnings from TriathlonliveTV passes to the fund.

In coordination with USA Triathlon, an ITU flag signed by Olympic medallists Alistair Brownlee (GBR), Javier Gomez (ESP), Lisa Norden (SWE) and World Champions Gwen Jorgensen (USA) and Non Stanford, as well as 120 more elite athletes was auctioned off on Ebay with all of the funds going to help Nepal.

“The Nepal Triathlon Association (NTA) family is thankful to the ITU President, Madam Marisol Casado, for her initiative to call on the global triathlon family to come together to help Nepal in this difficult situation. We thank all who have been a part of this collection.

“As there is a need of help and assistance in every sector, NTA has decided not to spread the amount on individuals, but choose one school which is destroyed and help completely to rebuild.

“We thank once again all of you for your cooperation. This initiation shows that the international sports community is more than only sports,” said NTA Secretary General Nilendra Shrestha.
