Entries opened today for the 2016 GODZone adventure race being held in Tasman next April with a strong turn out of teams expected to sign up early to snare a place in the prestigious event.

GODZone is to be hosted by the stunning resort town if Kaiteriteri Beach and the event is welcomed by the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board, Tasman District Council and supported by a high profile group of Tasman companies and business people. The event will run from the 2nd – 9th April 2016 and is the 5th instalment of what has become the largest expedition racing event in the world.

GODZone Race Director Warren Bates says that the response to the host location announcement was unprecedented and expects a full field of teams

“ Tasman is a hugely inspiring location for adventure racers, both in New Zealand and around the World, because of its unique micro climate, beautiful coastline, three diverse National Parks and the fact that its the home of many of the world’s best adventure racers, including Nathan Fa'avae and Sophie Hart of Team Seagate.

Pulling a team together in readiness to race next year can take time, but the first step on the journey is to ensure you actually have a spot to compete. The interest has been overwhelming this year and we expect a busy couple of days dealing with entries.”

This year GODZone has introduced a new format giving adventure racing teams the option to choose between the GZ Pure event and a new GZ Pursuit event that has a shorter course and requires teams to bring a support crew.

“ The two different formats compliment each other perfectly. GZ Pure is for those looking for the ultimate adventure racing challenge. The GZ Pursuit is the perfect gateway event for those teams who are new to expedition racing or want the benefits and social aspect of a support crew. It opens up our sport to a much wider base of competitors, who can now experience all the thrills, excitement and adventure of GODZone in a more achievable format” says Bates.

Whilst we expect that the lure of the GZ Pure event to remain strong for elite and experienced teams, those choosing the GZ Pursuit will be aware that they and their support crews will have an epic challenge ahead of them.”

A strictly limited number of teams will be accepted into each of the two GODZone categories due to the number of boats and equipment required for each team to race.
Entries opened to all teams at 9am New Zealand time.
