Lightness, great traction and extra cushioning make HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR the ideal ultra-distance trail shoe

By Allsports Distribution Ltd

The HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR trail running shoe - awarded the title of Competitor Magazine 2015 Trail Shoe of the Year - is credited with enabling ultra-runner Malcolm Law to complete the most audacious feat of human endurance ever attempted on New Zealand soil – the High Five-0 Challenge.

In the space of fifty days, Mr Law ran 1,659km with a total elevation gain of 81,779 metres -spending 437 hours on his feet. Understandably, this took an enormous toll on his body -particularly his knees. 19 days in, with the real possibility looming of not being able to complete the Challenge, Mr Law switched to HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR trail running shoes.

“I had the ultimate opportunity to put them to the test during the High Five-0 Challenge. Initially switching into the Challengers in the hope that they would help with my ongoing knee pain,” said Mr. Law. “I gave them a cautious trial on a couple of shorter days before committing to wearing them for the Routeburn and Kepler tracks on back-to-back days, then for several days where I knew the terrain involved long distances on hard-packed surfaces. By Day 50 I was so happy in them that I decided to run the whole of the DUAL marathon on Motutapu and Rangitoto in them.”

The HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR is perfect for everything from casual training to long racing on varied surfaces thanks to an aggressive outsole and increased support in the upper. Early-stage Meta-Rocker geometry provides a fluid, efficient ride, and independent rubber pods provide stability on uneven terrain for the runner who values versatility in their running shoe.

When asked what it was about the Challenger ATR’s that appealed so much, Mr. Law responded, “Their lightness, great traction and extra cushioning combine to make them an ideal ultra-distance shoe – one that can save an awful lot of the almost inevitable foot soreness that comes with constant pounding over long distances . . . Quite how you get such a responsive ‘trail feel’ shoe from a design that has so much cushioning I don’t know, but I really do feel ‘at one’ with trail running in the Challengers.”

The HOKA ONE ONE Challenger ATR, with a RRP of $229.00, is available at running specialty stores nationwide and online at www.hokaonone.co.nz.
