Millward and Kaye Superb in Colorado

Millward on top of his game

Callum Millward

Davide Giarini (ITA) was first out of the water, with Joe Umpenour (USA), Jimmy Seear (UST), Tim Don (GBR) Richie Cunningham (AUS), Greg Bennett (AUS) and Callum Millward (NZL) following less than a minute off the pace. Once on the bike, Giardini showed the way for much of the first half with Millward and Mark Bowstead (NZL) keeping the pressure on the leader. Bowstead took control of the race at 30 miles and carried a two minute lead and the fastest bike split on the day as he dismounted his bike ahead of Millward and Giardini and over three minutes ahead of Cunningham, Bennett, Don and Ben Hoffman (USA).

The first half of the run saw Bowstead hanging onto the lead with Millward persistently inching closer while Don was flying at a pace that would make him the winner if he could maintain the tempo. Millward took over the lead at eight mile, however, and never look back. He took the title in a time of 3:46:47. Late in the half marathon, Don used his run strength to grab a second place finish (3:48:11) from Bowstead who finished off the podium with his 3:48:34 race time.

Kaye does the damage on the bike

Alicia Kaye

Jodie Swallow (GBR) was first to scramble out of Boulder Reservoir with Camille Donat (FRA), Alicia Kaye (USA), Katy Blakemore (USA) and Laura Bennett (USA) all within a minute of the her heading into transition.

It was all the Kaye show on the bike as the former short-course specialist rode solo away from the field while laying down the fastest bike split on the day. She managed to power herself away from the field and dismounted her bike with advantages ranging from 4:44 to 7:07 on Swallow, Jeanni Seymour (ZAF) and Blakemore.

On the run, Kaye stretched out her lead on the field while the positions shuffled behind her. Kaye would take the win with 4:13:10, with Blakemore's second-fasted run garnering her a well-deserved second place finish (4:18:23), while Lesley Smith’s (USA) race-best run propelled her onto the podium in third.
