Paralympics New Zealand announces new Head Performance Coach to lead Para-Cycling programme to Rio 2016

By Paralympics New Zealand

Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Jono Hailstone as Head Performance Coach of the highly successful Para-Cycling programme.

Jono has been involved with the Para-Cycling programme for 5 years.  Most recently in the role of Assistant Performance Coach since April 2013.

Hailstone is well known for his coaching of London 2012 Paralympic Bronze medallist Fiona Southorn.  Most recently he coached Kate Horan to two successive Silver medals at the 2014 and 2015 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships and Tim Williams to a World Title at the 2014 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships.

Hailstone has a passion for Para-Cycling and development of his athletes.  He is looking forward to continuing to develop the Para-Cycling programme and build on the success of his predecessor Brendon Cameron.

PNZ High Performance Director Malcolm Humm is delighted to have secured Hailstone as part of a strong coaching team.

“Jono’s knowledge of Para-Cycling that he gained from his experiences with the London campaign will be invaluable to our programme as we continue to build to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games,” he continues, “his knowledge and skills will ensure that our athletes and coaching team have the best possible leadership and support.”

Mr Hailstone himself was equally excited by signing with PNZ.

“New Zealand Para-Cycling has gone from strength to strength and I am very excited about driving forward and building on that success.  Our focus will continue to extend to development athletes coming through the programme and ensuring its sustainability.”  He continued, “Our high performance Para-Cyclists are amongst the best in the world including Paralympic and World Champions and I am passionate about ensuring they continue to perform to their absolute best on the world stage,” said Hailstone.
