Frame retains points jersey in RAS Tour of Ireland

Kiwi cyclist Alex Frame has retained the points jersey after stage four of the An Post RAS Tour of Ireland today.

The Canterbury rider, who was a member of the world champion team pursuit on the track who are competing on the road in Europe as preparation towards the summer track season which will be highlighted by the UCI World Cup in Cambridge in December.

The 21 year old is in a battle with New Zealand teammate Aaron Gate, just one point clear in the points competition, although the overall tour leader, Austria’s Lukas Postlberger leads in the points race but can only be eligible for one jersey during the tour.

Postlberger managed to finish in a select eight strong winning break into Newport today, driven by the An Post Chain Reaction UCI Continental team that includes Gate and today’s stage winner Aidis Kruopis in the 135km stage to Bundoran.

Frame pipped Gate in the sprint for the line in the second group, 47 seconds behind the winner.

Gate is the leading Kiwi in general classification in ninth place at 4:35s down with Frame the best of the New Zealand team at 7:34 in 15th and is third on general classification in the young rider competition.

The rest of the Kiwi team road strongly in support with Marc Ryan, Nick Bain and Nick Kergozou in the main bunch at 3:54 behind the winner with Luke Mudgway further back.
Tomorrow’s fifth stage is over 142km to Ballina with two category climbs.
