Local long-distance runners living with medical devices called to participate in International Marathon

Local runners who are living with medical devices or who have benefited from medical technology are being urged to represent New Zealand in the 2014 Medtronic Global Heroes program. Up to 25 runners from around the world will be selected to receive a paid entry for themselves and a guest to the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon or the Medtronic TC 10 Mile in the United States, this October.

Sally Feinerman, a fitness expert and personal trainer from New Zealand, received a pacemaker in 2011 to help fix a block in her heart after collapsing during the Auckland Half Marathon. Sally was named a Global Hero in 2013.

“Collapsing in the Auckland Half Marathon was one of the best things that happened to me. It helped uncover my heart condition while I had access to a first‐aid team. After receiving my pacemaker in 2011 I was determined to reclaim my health and within the year began training for a marathon. Being named New Zealand’s only Global Hero in 2013 and crossing the line at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon was a triumphant and emotional moment.

People are often surprised that I can maintain an active lifestyle while having a pacemaker. My response is medical technology can improve your life and isn’t a hindrance. My aim is to inspire and motivate others to lead an active lifestyle, and I would encourage any like‐minded kiwis living with a medical device to apply for the 2014 Global Heroes program today!”

New Zealanders with medical device therapy to treat: heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain, spinal disorders, or neurological, gastroenterology and urological disorders; are eligible to qualify as a Global Hero, regardless of the manufacturer of their medical device.

To apply or recommend someone to be a 2014 Medtronic Global Hero, visit medtronic.com/globalheroes. The deadline for Global Hero applications is 25 April 2014. Runners will be chosen by a committee of Twin Cities in Motion. Certain conditions may apply and applicants must certify that they have discussed race participation with
their physician. A travel package is provided that includes airfare and accommodations for the Global Hero and their guest. The 32nd Annual Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon weekend will take place 3‐5 October 2014.
