The Rev Cycle Race announces elite teams for UCI 1.2 race, Cambridge NZ

This year the Rev Cycle Race event introduces its newly awarded UCI 1.2 status for its elite category, the Radio Sport REV Classic. It is a first in Australasia and coincides with the event’s 10th edition.

The REV Classic race is made up 55 Elite and Under 23 men in teams of 4-5 including; UCI continental, national, regional and club teams.

The continental teams from Australia/ New Zealand include the number one continental team in Oceania, Avanti Racing Team which includes defending champion Patrick Bevin alongside riders with local knowledge; Fraser Gough, Cameron Karwowski, Luke Mudgway, Taylor Gunman, Jason Christie (Reserve) and Tom Davison (Reserve). The team has already had a successful start to the 2015 with the team collecting a trifecta at the NZ Road Championships in January.

The second continental team entered is Team Budget Forklifts with riders Samuel Horgan, Daniel Barry, Westley Gough, Michael Torckler and Jack Anderson. The team has come off a fantastic 2014 season, winning four UCI Tours in the Oceania and Asian region.

The New Zealand National Team includes current national U23 Time Trial champion James Oram alongside road and track riders Ryan Wills, Roman Van Uden, Nick Kergozou and Sam Bewley – who rides for World Tour team Orica-Green Edge, which competes on the world stage at the Tour de France.

Other registered trade teams include:

Nature Valley Avanti Cycling Team, including last year’s runner up Sam Lindsay alongside Nick Bain, Cameron Wynniatt, Callum Gordon and Alex Heaney.

L&M Group Ricoh, James Williamson, Karl Poole, Anthony Chapman and Luke McDermott.

Breads of Europe All about Plumbing, Thomas Hubbard, Fraser Hewitt, Luke MacPherson, Tim Rush and Ben Robertson.

Blindz Direct, Mel Titter, Paul Duynhoven, Gregory Marfell, Blake Fergus, Jason Thomason and Phil Marfell (Reserve Rider).

Club teams entered are; Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club, Livingston Building Racing Team and the Race Director’s Team.

Already established New Zealand’s premier one day road race and supported by Cycling New Zealand, the REV Cycle Race has evolved from an individual to a team challenge.

The expectation from event organisers is that riders will be fiercely competitive as they aim to claim valuable UCI points for the fastest eight riders and a portion of the $10,000 prize money for top 10 finishers.

Points awarded that count towards UCI individual rankings are: 40 – 30 – 16 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 6 – 3

Spectators are encouraged to witness the continental and trade teams battle it out on challenging Waipa terrain.

The race begins at 10.20am from the corner of Taylor St and Swayne Rd, Cambridge with riders finishing the first lap approx. 1.10pm, with the final sprint expected approx. 2.10pm.

The course is 137km, comprising of a 100km first loop followed by a 37km second loop. The total ascent is 1488m with maximum elevation of 342.94, maximum gradient of 12% making it a touch day out in the saddle.

The event is endorsed by Cycling New Zealand and conducted under the regulations of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).

Every year 1500 keen riders tackle Cambridge’s infamous cycling terrain. Race categories satisfy young children right through to the world’s elite riders. The REV has something for everyone and showcases the true spirit of cycling.
