By International Triathlon Union

STOCKHOLM - Bermudian Flora Duffy earned her fifth victory of the WTS season after claiming gold at the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Stockholm. On the men's side, British Jonathan Brownlee got his first win of the season after beating Kristian Blummenfelt and Pierre Le Corre.

Becoming only the second woman in ITU history to have won five World Triathlon Series races in a single season, Bermuda’s Flora Duffy secured the place in history after a dominating victory at the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Stockholm. The win secured her the overall Series leader position going into the Rotterdam Grand Final next month as she will enter the race with a perfect score of 4000 points in the effort of retaining her world title.

“I was very happy with today to execute a solid race in the swim, bike and run. My swim has been a little shakier this year so it was nice to come out third behind Jess (Learmonth) and Lucy (Hall), it was a perfect position. And then onto the bike we were hammering on that first lap to create a gap and that kind of set the race up perfectly,” Duffy said.

Speaking of her position before Rotterdam, “That is the reason that I came here, I had five pretty good scores before today, but as you said you never know what is going to happen. With the Grand Final being points and a half you kind of want to go in there with have the biggest buffer that you can to make sure you can absolutely give yourself the world title.”

Taking the silver medal was Great Britain’s Jessica Learmonth, who earned her first career WTS medal, while the bronze went to Aussie Ashleigh Gentle who had a come-from-behind performance that gave her a fourth podium finish this season.

Men’s Elite Review
got his first victory of the season after performing a perfect race in 2017 ITU World Triathlon Stockholm. “A great swim, a breakaway on the bike and I pushed hard on the run”, as he said after the race. A perfect combination to redeem himself from his disappointing 4th place in the previous two races. After him, silver and bronze was decided on a sprint finish uphill, with Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR) claiming the silver and Pierre Le Corre (FRA) bronze.

“It’s been a tough few months for me, and I guess that’s how it feels to feel normal again”, said Jonny after the race. “The swim didn’t hurt, the bike didn’t hurt, and the first laps of the run didn’t hurt. It only started hurting with 2 km to go, and that’s great. I hate having bad races, I hate finishing bad after races, so it feels great to be back again. It was nice to actually perform a full triathlon”.

The race started with an amazing day in Stockholm, sunny and warm, and 54 men taking the start on the pontoon in Riddarfjärden. As is becoming a tradition on the ITU circuit, Slovakian Richard Vargalead the squad during the 1500m swim. He was closely followed by one of the biggest favorites in Stockholm, the younger Brownlee, as well as Aaron Royle (AUS) and Andrea Salvisberg (SUI).

When they took off on their bikes, a group of seven riders tried to break away from the very outset. Brownlee, Royle, Dorian Coninx (FRA), Salvisberg, Jonas Schomburg (ITU), Justus Nieschlag (GER) and Varga, with Verga falling off the back of the pack on the first Royal Palace hill climb. The six remaining competitors built a strong rhythm in order to open a wide gap from the chasers. This worked quite well lap after lap and increased the gap to one minute.
