By Cycling New Zealand

Ellesse Andrews celebrates her gold medal with her mother Angela and father Jon, who is Cycling New Zealand’s national junior coach.

Cambridge cyclist Jackson Ogle added a final medal to the New Zealand haul on the last day of the UCI Junior World Track Cycling Championships in Italy.

The 18 year old won a bronze medal in the junior men’s 1000m time trial on the Montichiari Velodrome.

The 11-strong New Zealand team finished with four medals led by the gold to Ellesse Andrews in the individual pursuit along with silver and bronze medals by the female and male team pursuits respectively and Ogle’s effort today.

Ogle clocked 1:02.756 to finish a second behind Russian winner Pavel Perchuk, and a fraction outside his New Zealand Championship-winning performance, with teammate Josh Scott (Christchurch) 20th.

Andrews and 16-year-old Shaane Fulton from Nelson both qualified for the final of the six-rider keirin competition. Fulton won her heat and was second behind the outstanding German rider Mathilde Gros in the semifinal, while Andrews progressed after winning her repechage and finished behind her teammate in the semifinal.

Both Kiwis had outside draws, pushing them to the back of the field and while both made big moves, with Andrews looping the field with a lap to go, they had to be content with fifth and sixth placings.

Emily Shearman (Palmerston North) and Nicole Shields (Clyde) teamed up to finish fifth in the two-rider Madison over 20kms, won by Italy. The Kiwis in the hunt for the bronze medal with France and the Netherlands with French pair winning the final double-points sprint to catapult them into the bronze medal position.

Christchurch’s Kate Smith  was 10th in the junior women’s Points race won by Canada’s Maggie Coles-Lyster, while the junior men’s pairing of Corbin Strong (Invercargill) and Aaron Wyllie (Auckland) were seventh in the 30km junior men’s Madison.

The race was won by Denmark, the only team to receive the20-point bonus for lapping the field, with Germany and Australia taking the major points in the final sprint to extinguish the Kiwis’ medal chances.
