Gate in line for points jersey in An Post RAS Tour of Ireland

By Sports Media NZ

Kiwi cyclist Aaron Gate will chase a second straight Points classification title in the final stage of the An Post RAS Tour of Ireland tomorrow.

Gate is competing along with other members of Cycling New Zealand’s endurance track squad, using the tour as part of their preparations towards the Rio Olympics.

Gate, riding for his An Post Chain Reaction professional team, cemented his lead in the green jersey Points competition after a gruelling seventh stage of 155km to Baltinglass with three category three climbs and the fearsome category one ascent of Mt Leinster.

Five riders went clear to fight for the line honours, won by irrepressible Irishman Eddie Dunbar, who was also a key figure in the breakaway yesterday.

Gate finished 56 seconds back in eighth while the other New Zealander prominent yesterday was double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston, who finished in the peloton just behind Gate in 24th.

It proved a battle of survival for the New Zealanders with Nick Kergozou and Regan Gough finishing 13:44 behind the winner, while Dylan Kennett did not finish. Gough lies eighth in the young rider category.

Tomorrow’s final stage 148kms from Kildare to the traditional finish at Skerries, just north of Dublin, before the New Zealand track team head back to their base in Belgium.
