Kennett second in opening stage of An Post RAS Tour of Ireland

By Cycling New Zealand

New Zealand cyclist Dylan Kennett finished second in the opening stage of the An Post RAS Tour of Ireland today.

Kennett is part of the Cycling New Zealand endurance track team using the race as preparations for the Rio Olympics.

Dutchman Taco van der Hoorne managed to escape off the front of a 15-strong group within sight of the finish of today’s 144km opening stage from Dublin to Multyfarnham, west of the capital.

Kennett led the chase but could not quite run down the Dutch rider to finish two seconds behind after the big field rode through some rain on the first stage.

He has earned the jersey for the leading young rider category and is second behind van der Hoorne in the Points competition.

Kennett’s New Zealand teammates Regan Gough and Hayden Roulston finished in the big peloton that finished just three seconds behind and included fellow high performance squad rider Aaron Gate, riding for his An Post Chain Reaction professional team.

Kiwi Taylor Gunman, who rides for the Madison Genesis continental team, also finished in the main bunch with other Kiwi track squad riders Nick Kergozou and Piet Bulling further behind.

The opening stage, with just one category climb, saw a small break reeled in 25kms from the finish before a group of 15 riders pushed off the front of the peloton in the final 3kms.

Van der Hoorne tried his luck with a strong move in the final kilometre and held on from a fast-finishing Kennett.

Tomorrow’s second stage is the longest of the eight-stage race, covering 184kms with one category three climb moving south to Charleville in County Cork.
