2016 Huntly Half Marathon Post Race Report

By RUN NZ

The all New Huntly Half Marathon was a great success with the new fast Half Marathon course providing many Personal Best times and the weather proving much better than previous editions held in the cold wet month of May.

The new scenic 10k and 5k Courses which took in trails around Lake Puketirini were also well received and provided an option for those not so keen on just a pure road event.

The timing 6 weeks out from Rotorua Marathon also proved to be great timing for many and these changes will continue in 2017 with the event planned for Sunday 19th March 2017.

The Half Marathon course was FAST with the Top 10 all finishing under 1hr 16min lead by Irishman Ciaran Flaherty in 1.09:17, 2nd Steve Rees-Jones in 1.10:18 and 3rd Ryan McAlister in 1.10:29. The field was lead through the Half Way Prime by Tim Stewart and Tony Payne.

The women field was lead by 1st Woman and 10th Overall, Rowan-Marie Torckler in an impressive 1.15:55, with 2nd being Hawks teammate Alice Mason in 1.18:36 and 3rd Nancy Jiang in 1.23:47.

The performance of the day though came in the 10km event with 12 year Old Mathijs Wetzels fighting back to beat some good quality seasoned runners on a course that featured a few small climbs and off road trails in what could be a New Zealand Age Grade record for 12 year olds with a time of 35:27. This Hamilton City Hawks runner could be the next big name to watch following in the footsteps of fellow Hawks members Zane and Jake Robertson.

The 5km Run that also featured off road trails and a decent climb was lead home overall by TriNZ Academy athletes Ashleigh Williams and Elise Salt with Junior Lucy Farrell making it a clean sweep for the women overall.
