Gaze takes national honours and first 2016 showdown for Rio Olympics

By Sports Media NZ

Waikato’s Sam Gaze has won the Altherm Window Systems New Zealand Mountain Bike Championships for cross-country at the Cardrona Bike Park near Wanaka.

It marked a decisive first blood for 2016 to the Specialized professional over world under-23 champion Anton Cooper as the pair battle for ultimate selection for the likely one men’s spot in the team for the Rio Olympics.

Gaze made a break on the second lap and took full advantage of a mechanical issue forcing a front wheel change for Cooper, and from there the result was never in doubt.

Queenstown’s Kate Fluker overcame a first lap puncture to storm back to win the women’s title.
