International Triathlon Union begins bid process for 2017 ITU World Cup races

By International Triathlon Union (ITU)

Ahead of the first ITU World Cup of the year set to be contested this weekend in Mooloolaba, Australia, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) is pleased to open the bidding process for 2017 ITU World Cup events.

“Hosting an ITU World Cup offers cities the opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle to its citizens while also showcasing their city to a massive age group audience,” said ITU President & IOC Member Marisol Casado. “The ITU World Cup circuit was our first series of events & we remain committed to ensuring these races offer quality racing to all participants.”

ITU Triathlon World Cup events provide world class racing for athletes pursing entry to the ITU World Triathlon Series (WTS), as well as offer qualification points for the Olympic Games and other Major Games.

World Cup races also garner significant international attention, with a 30-minute magazine show from each race distributed in the same media package as the WTS events.

Hosts of World Cups regularly enjoy an influx of tourist to its region with thousands of athletes signing up for mass participation races, creating a positive economic boost for the city.

While ITU accepts bids for World Cup and WTS races annually, local organising committees have the opportunity to present a multi-year bid.

Cities interested in hosting a World Cup must submit their bid for to ITU by 30 June, 2016. Successful cities will be notified following the ITU Executive Board meeting after 25 August, 2016.

The bid document for hosting a World Cup event is available here.
