Two Wins in a Row for Ski Racer Piera Hudson
By Snow Sports NZNew Zealand’s top ranked female ski racer Piera Hudson (Wanaka/Havelock North) has made a strong start to her new year by claiming back to back wins in the Super Giant Slalom at International Ski Federation (FIS) races in Aspen, USA.
Hudson won the first race on Tuesday (US time), finishing 1.14s ahead of USA’s Megan McGrew. World Cup winner and four-time winter Olympian Sarah Schleper (MEX) rounded out the podium in third place.
Hudson has been enjoying a run of success in the speed discipline of Super-G, claiming her first win at a FIS level Super G event only last month, at the US resort of Copper Mountain.
Speaking after Tuesday’s race she said, “It was great to get another Super G win under my belt! The Aspen Ski Club worked really hard to get the course in good shape for the race after a lot of snowfall recently. I'm really happy with the way I attacked the course and I plan on bringing even more for tomorrow's race!”
Which she duly did, winning the following day’s race and beating second place-getter Andrea Arnold (CZE) by 0.62s. Schleper finished third.
“I’m really happy to go two for two today in Aspen,” says Hudson. “The course was a lot more technical than yesterday but really fast and fun as well and it's always cool to share the podium with World Cup winner and four-time winter Olympian Sarah Schleper! Today was my third Super G win for the season so I hope I can keep it rolling for the rest of the winter!”
Hudson is now in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for a series of Slalom and Giant Slalom races. Next month she will head to Sochi, Russia – the venue for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games – with team mate Eliza Grigg (Darfield) to compete at the FIS Junior World Championships.
